Call him what you want, but one with the willingness to understand what these extremists (whether they be liberal or conservative) are saying cannot help but find some truth in what they are saying. If you dismiss people simply because of their extremist point of views, then you are no better than the windbags on capitol hill.
and no i don't really like listening to him either.

The problem is that the only people who seem to be interested enough to actually figure out what everyone is really saying (if they're saying anything) and have the ability to put it into layman's terms, where needed, are also the ones who are blatantly biased.

Any podcasts of independent "radio news" available? I'd be interested in learning, and I cannot stand listen to people bashing others for unrelated bullshit, ad hominem attacks are EVERYWHERE. On top of that, every single person in both parties might as well be the same three people for all that they are willing to vary publicly on their ideas, and after you've put the bullshit aside and figured that out, they have nothing new or interesting to say.

Aug 1 2009, 10:18 pm MillenniumArmy Post #24

Local ones tend to be more independent (as in people from your respective city giving news,) that's what I listen to. Over here they usually air during the traffic hours.

Aug 1 2009, 11:45 pm Sael Post #25

That's the problem. They aren't concerned with finding truth but instead with making themselves sound right.

I would have said the BBC is pretty independent, but that has a definite British perspective (i.e. pro-Obama).

:payne:

I couldn't read all the posts(in fact, I've only read first one xD), and I'm not as intellectual as you all, but I wanted to tell you what I think of this all:
First of all, I always though that Obama was using a "bounce effect" from the whole world's faith decrease in face to America created by Bush. People voted for him not because they though he was a good president, but only because they wanted someone which could give them back the Faith. They wanted someone which was obviously different and would represent a change and a progression regarding to the past. They didn't vote for the man itself, but for its differences!
It was probably hidden somewhere in the American's subconscious that they wanted to prove themselves that they were better persons than what their previous president, Bush, let the whole world think of them. It's just like when rich people watch at the news, see some "horror" like some views over the Third World and some statistics and goes like "Omg, it's so horrible!", then send a little amount of money just to feel better - washed of the ashamed feel the news left them.
Seriously, I always though Obama would simply appear, once elected, as a God and would really do his best to do good things over the country, but he would never do enough for his nation, which were waiting way too much from him (poor him).
Anyways, that was my feel about him.

Else, you gave some thoughts of your own and I'd like to refute them (even though I probably haven't understood them correctly):
Quote
$787 billion were instead of being placed into the government's hands via Stimulus Package, it were rather placed into the hands of the working American
You remember that famous tsunami? The HUGE amount we've sent to the population, once spread, was equivalent to something like 4 cents/person... we should never try to solve things like that. Give money to humanitarians organism which are able to do concrete actions.
Also, you've told about the unemployment rate which incredibly raised, people could relate this to Obama, but I wouldn't be that sure: the World's economy isn't helping him at all and tend to imply such events...

I know probably 90% of what I've said was bullshit, but anyways... I wish I could speak English better, it would at least have decreased to 75% ;P

Thought I'd give this a read since you QQ 'd in a another topic about how you didn't get the amount of attention you wanted here. Given that I'm not bothering to read points I bring up that you may already have addressed.

So I've decided to wait before voicing any comments or concerns about this package. Six months may still be a bit early to some, but to be too early is better than to be too late. This summer I have been listening to news radio as they actually talk about, things that matter today, unlike the media today with all this Michael Jackson died boohoo, Sarah Palin is a quitter lololol, omg lost children omgomgomg, etc etc. Daily, they talk about what's going on with our economy (Obama) and events going on around the world (Iran, N. Korea, etc.) I must say I wish I had gotten into radio news talk earlier.
What shows would these be? What direction do they lean? Is it physical radio(and/or local), or internet radio.
Also, I'm not just asking to possibly call attention to a bias. I've been searching internet radio for some good news talk and I've been pretty underwhelmed.

Not gonna quote anything in particular here, but your first big paragraph doesn't have anything to do with obama really. Just how when democrats get stuck in a tight spot they resort to attacking president bush. Sometimes it's just a quick way out, but most of the time the reason is to draw a parallel, and this is legitimate. When someone criticizes for debt spending, it's REQUIRED to talk about how bush did it, and how he did it wrong.

Alright next you start going off on the stimulus. Well I gotta say I've tried understanding it, but it's probably the most confusing thing I've ever tried to comprehend (politically). So either I'm too stupid to really get it, or it's corrupt and evilly designed to confuse. While I think there is a good chance either way, I think most people refuse to consider the prior. I hope you are not one of those people.

Here's something conservatives brought up. What if, what if this $787 billion were instead of being placed into the government's hands via Stimulus Package, it were rather placed into the hands of the working American, the hard working money earning United States of American Citizen or laborer and circulated throughout our nation like the way our founding fathers wanted this nation to run like? How this would be done is to relieve us of our taxes for a bit (Essentially by not having to pay taxes the Government is in short handing money back to us.) Or something like that I can't remember exactly, but from the general idea of this would we be where we are right now? To be honest, I don't know. I would love to hear you guys' input on this.
That's actually what we did under Bush. People didn't spend, they horded. The idea is that 200k/yr earner john smith gets a tax cut, thus he has more money to spend, or further his business if he is an entrepreneur. The government makes up for this money by cutting back on welfare programs because the jobless(joe shmoe) will have better employment opportunitie, thus eliminating the need for them.
Turns out John Smith is a greedy fuck and doesn't play that way when he get's a break.
Now maybe you're talking about something like where everyone got like $1,000 in a government check, well I remember what I did with mine - student loans. Most people will probably try and pay off a debt, not buy merchandise. I'd rather see a tax break than this actually. Thank god it's not on the table.

I don't want to graduate from college and end up as part of the fast growing 10%+ unemployed individuals. I would also not like to see my parents once again get laid off and fumble through the job listings pages looking for a way to put me through school and support themselves.
I thought I read somewhere you said your doing an internship for your dad who has his own business?

Now I've just go to just say to you MA "WHAT THE FUCK!"
I don't know too much about the stimulus, but you mentioned how we are ignoring the important stuff like health care reform(something I know a lot more about), and that you made a topic about these more important issues. I too am growing tired of defending obama on this silly speech debacle and would like to engage in something important like health care. I come here hoping to set you straight in this, but this topic is void of what you mentioned :(

Like I said, local ones. They're independent physical radio. Some of them have one conservative host and one liberal host and all they do is argue with their callers/listeners.

The point is that just because Bush did it wrong doesn't automatically mean that Barrack Obama is forgiven for everything bad thing he might've done, which at the time seemed to me was happening everywhere. But, I am glad to see that nowadays people in congress are opening their eyes a bit.

I want Obama to succeed, i want Obama's stimulus packages to do good, I want Obama to be a great president. If you thought I was one of those people who wanted Obama to fail, then you are horribly wrong and missed the whole point of this thread (I had to make sure we got this clear because you accused me of being a conservative a while back.) That's why i voted for him over John McCain because I believe he can do all sorts of great things for our country. Unfortunately 8 months later into his presidency, me and a large number of people aren't exactly pleased. Maybe we expected too much out of him.

Not necessarily ignoring, but rather finding scapegoats or other insignificant issues as grounds for lashing out at each other.
When I made this topic, it was done around the time which talk about the stimulus package dominated our *real* headlines (remember just a couple short months ago when people wouldn't stop talking about Michael Jackson?) It was only recently that we've shifted our focus into health care reform, and I would be delighted if everyone could just sit down and listen. However, when I still see people running their mouths bickering over other issues like a simple "Work hard! Study hard!" speech and then hearing people lashing out at each other for the first time since Obama's become our president, it really breaks my heart.

I would not put the 700 billion into the working American. I would put it in green jobs, agriculture and education. New jobs can be created by having an increase in educated people. The U.S. is lacking behind in education and I do not think the average working American would help the economy. If more people were educated, we could have better technology to build for the future.
On the contrary, what you're suggesting would lead into job shortage in a matter of months, and anarchy in a matter of a few more.

I feel like what you gave me was a knee-jerk reaction here. I wasn't saying or even implying you wanted Obama to fail. You responded in a way that had nothing to do with the point I tried to make. What's even worse is that I actually know what your response is typically used against.
Here's how it goes: Democrat pundit accuses Republican pundit of doing whatever they can to make sure Obama's plans fail. Democrats started saying this ever since Rush Limbaugh said he wants Obama to fail. It's mostly used as a sort of scape-goat to get Dems out of a tough question (exactly like the Bush stuff you hate). The Republican then goes on to say just about everything you just said word for word, sometimes even adding in that Rush is not the official representative for their party.
NOTHING to do with what I was saying. I was actually kind of proud of what I said when I typed it because it wasn't something I heard a liberal pundit say before that I was just parroting. I was trying to say that a lot of times if people can't understand something very complex (like evolution) their first impulse is to call it a lie. It's an ego problem.

A lot of this OP is complaining about the stimulus package. Turns out that in a survey of top economic experts from the US, most of them agreed that the stimulus saved more jobs than otherwise and that overall the stimulus will produce more in benefits than it cost.

Haha Obama was elected president when I was senior in high school.

I remember the morning of the next day after Obama was elected. Staying up to watch the speech I couldn't finish my math homework in time.

I know Obama being elected president is huge historical progress, but it didn't immediately bring about change of my circumstances.

I remember just yelling "OBAMA" at every person that was in the democratic minority at my school the day he was elected. It was pretty cool.
