Are you sure about that?

PRECISELY. Why the hell would I like to be anywhere else? I spend more time in my mind than I do on earth. And I like my mind.

I am not advocating the use of drugs (as they are illegal), but I believe most things should be tried once.
Addiction is for the weak.

@samsizzle:
That is the main reason why I smoke weed and ingest shrooms to be completely honest. Plus it helps curve the pain in my knees and lower back. :-_-:

i think certain drugs can definitely make you more open minded, which can be a great thing. I would rather be sober though.
I don't think it is necessarily the drugs that make one open-minded, but rather the type of person who takes the drugs is already open-minded (otherwise why would they so willingly take them in the first place?).

...All sorts of people get high, I realize now. Even people I thought were completely clean :\
I remember when I asked my dad for a sip of beer, thinking it would be really sweet. Poor me. It tasted like pure and concentrated shit. I have never tried any other kind of drug in my life ever since. They are expensive and I do not wish to become an slave to anything, for I know very well how weak my desire and will can be.
Well, it's all willpower for most drugs when it comes to stopping and moderation. More power to ya if you don't do it though. And you have no idea what it's like to think while high. It's one of my favorite things to do. Smoke a bowl on the porch whilst thinking about theoretical physics or something like that.

Also, I agree with you Farty. That makes perfect sense.

Drugs can help you get a lot farther into your own mind and thoughts than you've ever been before. And not in a bad way, as that sounds really creepy. You'd be surprised.

Drugs aren't illegal, I know so many people on prescription drugs who live in a world of ignorance and sadness. Drug policy in the States sucks.

Anywho.. Salvia is very fun. I know a lot of people who flip on it, but every time I've had it, I have enjoyed the experience. Its like a 5 minute dream. Plus its totally legal because its extracted from Sage.
One of the first times I smoked it, I was in my basement listening to music and playing pool with some friends, the music got distorted and basically all the things I should have heard and seen were transformed. I LEFT reality. I saw a rainbow colored carousel in my freakin head and some crazy gnomes were singing whatever song was playing.
It was brief, colorful, and fun as hell. Salvia is always a prime choice if you want to laugh with some friends. But if you dont hit it right or have a weak potency, sometimes people just go into laughing fits where they physically cant stop. Thats fun and all, but try to hit it harder to see some really cool shit.

Mushrooms are awesome if youve got nothing to do on a saturday or sunday.

But in my busy life, I usually just smoke weed and relieve myself of all stress.

Quote from DT_Battlekruser

I won't make this thread into a moralistic crusade for or against drugs, but I do look negatively on drugs and their users. None of the traditional categorical statements are true ("All druggies go to prison/have no prospects, etc."), and it is certainly possible to be good or successful and use drugs. At the same time, I think it is fair to say that success is not because of drugs. I find it perfectly possible to lead a happy and fulfilling life without ingesting or inhaling chemicals to try to control my mood. I see no need for or benefit in drugs, and especially when they are an expensive and often illegal habit, it seems like an exceedingly poor choice to do drugs. I can't stereotype and say that everyone that gets high is trying to run away from something, but certainly a common reason for getting stoned/drunk/whatever is to try to escape the real world. Not to mention, buying illegal drugs funds a black market economy that results in thousands of deaths a year (see the violence in Mexico).

One of the things that bothers me about most drug users coherent enough to argue intelligently is that they think themselves superior because they are not "sheep" who follow the establishment's anathema on drugs. Of course it is possible to use drugs in a responsible manner and lead an otherwise normal life. But someone like Ashamed comes off as a little belittling of those who don't agree with him.

In short, drugs are not going to ruin your life and prospects, but I see them as a totally unnecessary habit that is better avoided.
Quote from DT_Battlekruser
A few reasons:

1. It's exposure to chemicals that are altering your body. This is mostly a personal thing, but I think this carries more inherent and unforeseen dangers than other recreational activities. I know you can argue that this is similar to eating vitamins in your food or whatever, but like I said it's mostly a personal thing. I think taking anything unusual needs a damn good reason.

2. The large cost and illegality (in most cases).

3. While drug users can argue tirelessly debunking various "anti-drug myths" I also don't believe that drug use is completely free from any negative side effects. Unlike certain things (such as exercise), using drugs doesn't seem to carry any lasting benefit.

As far as video games go, I think when they are played beyond a certain point, they can be just as much of a problem as drugs, if not more (god forbid I say that on a gaming website). I think video games are inherently less dangerous, but can be abused like anything else. I don't have much a higher opinion of chronic video game playing (the ~7 hour a day kind) than of chronic drug use.

EDIT: At the bottom level, this is a moral argument, not a logical argument. I am morally opposed to most of what drugs are. I don't believe in using substances to chemically control your mood or stay happy; in my opinion doing so is unnatural and unhealthy. I am also opposed to the idea of trying to drown your troubles. Loud "music", senseless parties, alcohol, and the "rave drugs" all espouse this. It's a culture that makes my skin crawl.
I think you have this view because you've never done any of these things.

First off, all people do drugs. Your brain makes them, they're in coffee, tea, food, prescription pills, and everything else. My point is that there is as much variety in drugs as there are in anything else in life. Its just like how some machines are created to make things (tools), and some are created to kill things (weapons).

Next, don't look at it as a moment in time where you are hiding from reality. Because its quite the opposite. When I smoke weed and talk to friends or ponder on my own, I reach realizations that when sober, they take much longer to realize. My drug use is less about getting drunk and forgetting, but more about increasing my life's experiences. You can't justifiably say that drugs have no place in your life or hold no fascination to you because you HAVEN'T TRIED THEM. That's like saying you don't like white water rafting if you've never tried it.

So next time, before you try to comment on something, make sure you have some 1st hand experience on it. I, for example, can't tell you how heroin is, because I haven't tried it. That is a line Im not willing to cross after seeing people on it. But there are too many drugs worth while to just ignore recreational drug use.

Do your research, talk to friends, try a drug and expand your mind.
Quote from rockz
Salvia: be prepared to be eaten by your couch while on a roller coaster.
Alcohol: be prepared to lose motor function and stability under prolonged exposure.
Weed: from what I've heard, it's much milder than Salvia, but lasts 10x as long. Much more "efficient".
Crack: be prepared to suck dicks.
Yeyo: Enjoy your nosebleeds.
Meth: Riding a horse bareback into your parents house and trampling over the gnomes living under the bed isn't normal. But on meth it is.

Personally, I hate not being in complete control of my bodily functions, so I have limited experience with ingested chemicals.
Haaa, the salvia one made me laugh, that is exactly what happened to me. Every time I hit it right, I get swallowed by the room. Its because you EXIT reality and enter your mind, that's where the crazy shit is.

Sorry about the double post.

I am not going to get bogged down in a moral argument with no rational solution, but let me just turn a little bit of your argument against yourself. Why are you not willing to try heroin? Wouldn't you be "expanding your mind"? The entire argument you just made against me would dictate that you should try heroin or you are being closed-minded.

But, if you let your reasoning here stand, then I will take it. I have seen the opinions and attitudes of many drug users, and I dislike them. Most seem to feel superior to the "sheep" who don't do drugs, and there seems a pervading expression of "shit man.. this is so cool" without coherent ability to articulate thoughts. I am a conservative at heart (this really doesn't apply to politics - I have conservative morals but libertarian views on the government in private life), and the one thing I hate more than any other is the argument, "Just try it.. you can't possibly imagine what you are missing." The argument is usually accompanied by a lack of other reasoning, but most importantly I subscribe to the philosophy "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I lead a very happy life without relying on the effects of drugs, and therefore feel zero compulsion to "just try it" because "dude.. it's trippin' balls".

Regarding the heroin thing, I know its not worth trying because of the research I've done. Its an opiate, I have been prescribed vicodin and percocet which are lesser types of opiates. Also, I was put on morphine in the emergency room. I can tell you that the few times I've been on this drug, the ecstasy I experienced was unequaled by anything I've done. And it was scary. Because as soon as it wore off, I wanted, physically and mentally, a lot more. There is too much evidence against drugs like that for me to be comfortable trying.

I believe you're at a point my friend was at a few years back. He thought, "My life is fine, why try marijuana when it seems like it will just damage my lungs?" He is a X-country runner for Colgate and he finally tried smoking weed out of a vaporizer and he loved it. I think it takes a leap of faith to try certain things, like jumping into the pool and swimming for the first time. But its damn fun.

And to make it perfectly clear, I am not advocating use of all drugs. In fact, I know this world would be a better place if people drank less. Don't get me wrong, I like a good beer or some rum, but so many peoples' lives are in the gutter because of it. But there is a time and place for everything. If one can live in moderation, I can guarantee that trying some drugs will enhance that persons life experiences.

DTBK, different drugs are used for different things lol
I think you're trying to group all drugs into one thing, mostly cannabis and psychedelics are used to "expand your mind", while opiates just make you feel like you've got 10 swedish super models pleasuring you. All people do drugs for different reasons whether it be medical or for fun (only certain drugs should be used that way, lol). However, I don't think you're going to win this argument in a thread full of drug aficionados.

1. Not in all states.

2. It's not a sage extract, per se. It's related to it, but isn't typical household sage.
