Well it's still summer, and what better way to use some of that time to create some music!
I have not seen any musical contest around here and know there are a few musicians around so...
Why not have a small competition!

Some of us play music by ear, others by sheet music. So I'll try to make some things fair.
The theme for the composition I was going to say summer related. But I'd love for all to expands their imagination as well. oh and don't forget voice as well, you can compose lyrics about rain!

Theme is Rain

It can be music set to rain clouds being cleared from the sky, to rain forming a storm, music while rain is falling.
This picture seems can go into many directions as to a set emotion in a piece. The piece should move from there being rain to something else, or say on the same idea. I think having a theme may make this a bit more of a challenge. good luck.

Due Date: Aug. 20th

Rules for Participation
1. Only one composition may be submitter, whether its just a sound file or a video.
2. Must have to do with the main theme.
3. If it is a recording off an electric instrument, (digital piano, electric guitar, electric drumset, ect.) it will be aloud. Computer programs allowed.
4. Try to have some melody planned planned out rather than just a random improvisation, this is a music composition contest.
5. If you are able to write your piece down on staff paper, please do so.
6. Just as sen rules, please have respect for others.

Here are some rules for now. I'll have a little suggestion list at bottom since they'll act more of a guideline than rules. I've also been thinking to make this less of a contest and more of a contribute to our community. I hope all entries do have some harmonical structure in it, rather than just noise. After this is done, I'll probly place the files all into one download folder and let the winner be on track 01, plus advertise for him/her through my signature or something. Anyways, enjoy writing music whether its in your head or on paper. Due date is by August.20th.

Suggestion:
A. Stay within or below 5 minutes of recording
B. Make recording as best as possible
C. Give it a motive or a theme
D. If theme repeats, embellish or variate the theme on repeat

Judging

Provide a little description of your piece as well. please. ^^

Also because there might be a variety of different genres of music, I'd like two more judges to join me. Preferably two who aren't participating here and who have ears for anything. We might be having classical, jazz, metal, voice. So yeah. PM or Post here if you'd like to join in judging. I'll let the community participate in judging as well on a different scale of judging. And though I have not planned out exactly how to judge, you can all start composing while me and any additional judges think of a way. ^^ gl.

Back* from the grave

Sounds like fun, but I'm not too musically inclined--the most musical thing I play is guitar hero. I think that any form of music is more commendable than pressing 5 keys and strumming, so I won't laugh at anyone.

I can't actually contribute much to the diversity of the contest, but PM me if you need some help.

The sword and the faith

Wish I had learned to play guitar a long time ago. Currently all I do is vocals and lyrics. Good luck to everyone participating.

Exactly.

I can help you judge if you're interested, as much as I'd like to submit something I barely have got the time. If this gets little contestants I might just participate then, for support.

Are we allowed to make teams?

Yeah, a composition can consist of any number instruments, I'm guessing any number of composers too?
As long as the submitted piece is all one file. ^^

Vocals alone a good composition does not make, or so I think.

So by the OP, I'm guessing music made in something like FL Studio won't be allowed? No fun >:(

Yeah, I don't exactly have a drum set I can record. We shouldn't be punished because we lack hardware :P And you're also totally contradicting yourself. You said yourself, it's a MUSIC COMPOSITION contest, not a 'music performing' contest.

How is that fair for people that actually put effort and interest into learning a musical instrument to create actual real music?
What KK said I have no problem with, I don't mind people having the aid of a pre recorded drum beat and play it back in order to sing or play guitar or whatever but rather than entirely using a software that with just clicks creates the music for you.

If we are judging these on some sort of rubric, we could penalize the people who use only software, but I find that unfair.

You could have two categories to submit work in, performed and synthesized.

Ok well, drums are percussion instruments, I don't have a problem with those being computerized for aid. If someone has to use a software, maybe he/she can submit sheet music and ask somebody else to perform it. If someone has to use a software then obviously he/she knows notation and should be able to provide sheet music. For those who play by ear, I don't know how much trouble it'll be to figure out sheet music notation. I have no idea how else to make this fair. I know not everyone who plays music started with reading music off paper or ever did. If anyone can come up with a real solution maybe I can post up a new set of rules and possibly extend the date a little.

My opinion: who the hell cares about rules and fairness.

Let people submit whatever the pancakes they want, as long as they composed it. Judge accordingly. No one should really care if the judging ends up biased or some crap. It should just be nice for everyone to share some music with each other.

It's not like there's even a reward at stake aside from some inflated sense of pride.

p.s. I'll just end up posting something i write on guitar and record on my mp3 player. Not exactly high quality. at all.
