First of all, if anyone has the time. I'd like for you to suggest parts. I myself have a list, but I'd like to hear your suggestions first.

But first off, questions:

What's the difference between Duo and Quad? I've heard that they have their pros and cons. I'd just like to fully hear them.

None.

May 19 2009, 3:21 am Falkoner Post #2

Duo acts as a single processor better, and if you're gaming, it is much much better, if you are multitasking I would still recommend the Duo, if you're using any processor intensive programs, but if you're just using basic programs, a Quad might actually be better for you.

The sword and the faith

Didn't I already do this for you? Or was that someone else?

Three things:
1. Don't listen to the other yahoos around here who don't know what they're talking about.
2. Wait for my parts list, which I will deliver later tonight.
3. Give me a budget and what you want this computer to do.

=======================================================
Ok so I went a little extravagant on the cooling for this one, which means we can drop the price a little if need be. But I had fun with it.

Case - Coolermaster RC590
The 590 is a less hardcore version of my favorite case the RC690 which I use myself. Its still a really nice case, lots of fan space.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119152

Harddrive - Seagate 500GB 7200.12
Ladies and gentlemen it is the one and only 700.12. A single platter 500GB drive for all your storage needs.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148395

GFX - HIS HD4850 1GB
The 4850 1GB is a solid card at an unbeatable price. Enjoy your awesome.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161275

DVDDrive - Lite-on Black Drive
Not much to say. It does what it does. SATA interface so none of those nasty ribbon cables.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106276

PSU - Rosewill 550w
Does everything you need it to do. Ain't the best PSU, certainly ain't no Corsair. But for the price, you aren't going to find much better. I remain solid in my stance that Corsair overcharges and should only be bough on sale.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182030

RAM - 2x2GB OCZ DDR2 1066
Solid cheap kit of 4GB DDR 2 1066 RAM.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227362

Motherboard - ASUS P5Q SE
Lingie bought the same one open box. It works fine. Anyone coming in here talking shit about open box is looking for trouble. And they'll get it. Want a retail one? Fine, pay 50$ for a few cables and a box.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131347R

CPU - E7400
I was going to go with the E8400 but its just too expensive for my tastes. The E7400 OCs like a monster and will serve you well.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115206
Edit: Someone in the review said he got this puppy up to 4.1GHz with a lesser heatsink and mobo. Hitting 4GHz will probably be pretty easy for you.

Case fans - Scythe Slipstream 120mm (4x)
This is where I went a little crazy. 4 of these little babies to throw in all those fan spots on your RC590. 2 on the side, 2 on the top, plus the 2 it already comes with installed.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185060

CPU Cooler - Xigmatek HDT-S1283
Solid CPU cooler for OCing that nice E7400.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003

Not included in price due to out of stock: Thermal Compound - OCZ Freezer
Its like 5$ a tube. When it goes back in stock grab it or get a tube of Arctic MX-2.

Price after tax and shipping to my area - $724.21

What Ex has provided is actually similar to the items I pulled up.

But. Few things...

Case
I'm considering an Antec case.

HDD
Nothing wrong with HDD.

GFX
Nothing wrong with GFX, although, never heard of HIS. My card right now is from like, powercolor. :P

Optical Drives
1) DVD-ROM Compatible.
2) DVD Burner.

PSU
Nothing wrong with PSU, but it does have flashy lights. :P

RAM
http://www.mushkin.com/

Motherboard
More recently, (at least in Canada), Asus has been cheaping out on products. Spoke to a couple people, and said that I should get something from Evga or Gigabyte.
Still don't trust Open Box regardless. It's too much of a hassle if the thing is damaged along the way or whatever.

CPU
Hopefully I can find a 3.2 Core2Duo, or a 2.8 Quad. This thing has to last a while. As in a decade. :P
Based on that report of clocking to 4.1Ghz, I might consider this though.

Fans
Overall good. Not a fan of taking out fans and cleaning them every month.

Heatsink
Nothing wrong with Heatsink.

My budget right now is ~$1000 CDN, including:

Monitor (22" Widescreen or up?)
Mouse/Keyboard (Wireless)
Speakers (Considering the Z23 or the G51 from Logitech).
Shipping and Handling.

None.

WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG FUCKING WRONG.
The Antec 300, 600, 900, and 1200 are all INFERIOR to the 590 and 690. You get one of those and that's the end of any help from me. Ever.

Its the 7200.12, single platter design. I know you have no idea why that's important but it is.

Powercolor, HIS, Saphire, all good ATI manufacturers.

It isn't a combo drive but I didn't look hard. Totally optional IMO.

OHHH SHINY.

No, no, and more no.
Muskin is quality I admit but they aren't much for price. The OCZ kit is a trusted brand at a price you cannot beat. Wanna spend more for nothing more than a brand name? Be my guest.

Then enjoy overpaying. Especially if you choose EVGA. Giga makes good boards. Go for a nice P45 from them, but it wont be cheap.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128372 Not so bad for 95$ but I got a DFI board (Best of the best) for about 80$ open box.

The E7xxx CPUs can clock more than 3.2 on a bad day. The E7200 could do 3.2 in its sleep. And quad cores are not optimal for gaming. And they wont be for another 2-3 years. People don't seem to realize how hard it is to make a game that takes advantage of 4 cores, much less 4 cores with 2 threads each like the i7.

ASUS has some nice 20-24" monitors on the egg. They're solid, I'd buy one myself. ASUS made my GFX card which I got open box btw, and I could not be happier. I admit some of their high end (X48 or X58) mobos have problems, but as for everything else, they're solid. I stand behind them.

Wireless is overrated but do as you will.

For 35$, can you really go wrong? I use a similar SB card and its a BIG improvement over my onboard.

HOLD ON.
I just remembered I am not recommending Creative products anymore after they sabotaged their own drivers.

The sword and the faith

Good call IP as the ASUS you selected in particular has too much latency (5ms) for gaming. However I like this one:

The latency times are of different measures, 2ms GTG for those, 5ms for the ASUS I posted. I doubt there's much difference. If I understand right, GTG was from gray to another shade and maybe back to gray? Very slight light change where the 5ms non-gtg was from white to black and back to white, which is a lot more of a dramatic change.
I could be horribly wrong, again.

Either way, I do like yours for the VESA mounting. Hate the fact it comes with speakers. LG = better contrast, yours comes with a DVI cable which bumped the LG up another $13. Both the ASUS I posted and the LG is full HD 1080p, which may or may not be important (can dual as a sexy xbox360 monitor). Finally, I simply didn't like how the monitor is presented (buttons, orange power button).

Lots of monitors have very slight advantages over other ones while remaining in the same price range. Very fucking hard to pick one.

May 19 2009, 6:45 pm Forsaken Archer Post #9

I just found this by looking up GTG vs normal response times. Just as I wrote:
Quote from As">http://www.dansdata.com/askdan00009.htm]As I explained in that old review, it's natural for LCD monitors to take longer to change their pixel state when you ask the pixels to change by a smaller amount. That's called "grey-to-grey" or "GTG" response time, and there's no clear standard for measuring it.

Grey-to-grey changes happen whenever you're not asking one subpixel (each pixel's made up of a red, a green and a blue subpixel) to go all the way from fully on (which, confusingly, means that subpixel is black; a powered LCD element blocks light) to fully off (which means it's as bright red, green or blue as it can manage). The LCD elements are driven to the desired brightness by a control voltage, and (to a first approximation) the closer they are already to the brightness you're looking for, the longer it will take them to reach the target brightness.

For small brightness changes this doesn't matter much, because you can't easily see the difference anyway. But for medium changes it can be very visible. That's why a mouse cursor waved around on a grey background may be much more noticeably blurry, on an older LCD, than when it's waved around on a black or white background.

To get around this problem, all LCD manufacturers - not just Asus - have come up with "Response Time Compensation" tricks, which do things like overdriving the control voltage until the subpixel gets to the right brightness, then chopping it to the value you actually want. These tricks are quite sophisticated now, and they're what give us all of these tiny response time figures for modern LCDs, like the 5ms for the Samsung 225BW.

I read a lot about how LCD's specs are cheesy as hell and there's no definite way to judge them as each manufacture does their own thing.
We need some standards up in here.
2ms GTG might actually be worse than normal 5ms.

The sword and the faith

The Antec case offers inferior design and cooling performance in comparison. The case also informs everyone that you are a PC hispter who cares more about how it looks than how it preforms. In short, it makes me hate you and never want to help you ever again..

The Q6600 isn't worth it's price. Currently, for quad cores, its the Q9550 or go home. And it is EXPENSIVE. Luckily you can just throw it in and it'll mesh with the rest of your build, CPU cooler, mobo everything.

DFI is amazing, I have their top P35 board and I love it. I can't speak of their lowend products because I've never bought one. But for me, its DFI or nothing, after being burned by MSI twice I will never buy a non-DFI board.

You can make filters out of anything, I know some people use material you get at pet stores for fishtanks or something, I forget the details. It's just a wire mesh really. The fans are worth it though, they'll keep the case nice and cool man. Unless you get the Antec case, in which case, stay the fuck away from me or I'll rip your eyes out.

Monitor wise don't go with anything under 22". Try to get the highest resolution with the lowest latency possible.

Since you wanted my input:

~~~ Processor ~~~
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale 2.8GHz 3MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core ( link ) = $120
or
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core ( link ) = $170
$50 for the extra 3mb cache, if you can personally justify it. You can easily overclock either. I would probably go with Ex's recommendation with the E7400 and save that money for some other area.
~~~ CPU Cooler ~~~
Artic 7 link
or
XIGMATEK Rifle link
or
Thermalake 120 link

~~~ Motherboard ~~~
You know what, I seriously don't fucking know. Prices seemed to have jumped up to start supporting ddr3 and higher ddr2 ram as well as the Pentiu processor. There doesn't really seem to be any good obvious choices. After looking for like 15 minutes, I chose this:
ASUS P5Q SE/R LGA 775 Intel P45 ( link ) = $105 - $15MIR
~~~ Ram ~~~
OCZ doesn't seem to have the greatest ram at ddr1066.
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit ( link ) = $60
Or your muskin. Price is the same for the same type. I would check mobo specs to see what's officially supported.

~~~ Hard drive ~~~
For me personally, I would select a smaller system drive and use your current drives / extra new drives for storage of files. 500 gigs is too big for a system drive. Speed is the main factor here, not storage capacity. It all comes to preference though. Me = One system drive, everything else in external enclosures with fans. That way, I can also reformat it easily. However, the price difference between a 500 gig harddrive and same brand/type 160 gig harddrive is small. Really up to what you need as far as storage goes.
Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10000 RPM SATA 1.5Gb/s ( link ) = $80 - $20MIR
Overkill: SSD flash harddrive. Newegg had a shell shocker deal on them the other day. I'm waiting till they advance a little more.
Ex's single platter Seagate is nice as well. <3 seagate.
~~~ Video card ~~~
XFX HD-485X-ZDFC Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 ( link ) = $140
IDK yet if I can personally recommend. Waiting for mine to be shipped to me. I'm kinda a nvidia fan from past great experiences (except my current shit MSI card) and slightly weaker experiences with older Radeon cards. I guess ATI stepped their game up, so we'll see.

~~~ PSU ~~~
Depends on your harddrive usage from before and whether or not you are really going to waste money buying two dvd drives. Really wish I knew what you do with your computer. I run almost everything from the 2nd internal harddrive cd wise, because I hate dvds and dvd drives and they hate me. They always fail me. Always.
Eh, screw it:
CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V ( link ) = $100 - $20MIR
~~~ DVD / CD ~~~
The fuck? Where did my ASUS drive go? It was nice and cheap and even had lightscribe.
LG Black 22X ( link ) = $24
Didn't look up the differences with the two LG models. One had free shipping so I went with that.

~~~ Case ~~~
Really a great matter of preference. Just pick something with some good fan slots and bonus if it has a side vent. Window panel is preference. Looks is preference. Front jacks is preference. Tool-less case is nice, but can be annoying with some non-standard items (my card reader isn't long enough to use all the pins).
~~~ Case Fans ~~~
Go to newegg -> fans -> sort by what you need (usually 80mm / 120mm) and best rating. Pick whatever you want as far as noise / looks. Go for air flow especially on the 120mm fans (intake in the front, out on the back.
Edit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185054
Pros: Free shipping (cheaper), more airflow Cons: Louder
vs:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185060

Some good fans with LEDs if you care or fan controllers if you desire. Anything with ~100-130 CFM.

So as you asked. Ex's setup is nice. OCZ ram at 1066 has worse timings than G.Skill and muskin.
I think Ex is a bit of an OCZ fan boy ;o ;o ;o

===========================================================================
Total: ~$670 without case / fans / thermal paste Shipping was only $8 to me, would definitely be more with a case. I would recommend the free shipping 120mm fans with extra air flow.

Excalibur always seems to cheap out on power supplies.
The power supplies I recommend are adequate. They aren't top of the line, but they'll do their job. The only time you need a top rate power supply is when you are pushing its max output (500w load on a 550w for example), the systems we're doing here are well below the limit of the PSU being used.
