Ironicly the site is still going to function, and they're only in for 1 year.

God if only I could provide that much content and get less then 10, Id consider my life worth it.

Oh cool, it's on par with the rest of the world dealing with actual sea pirates.

Good god, I hope their appeal makes them innocent.
Legally, they're not at fault. It's a search engine. Don't blame google for CP.

The site is legal. It should be illegal. There is no illegal content one the server, just the ability to download a file which shows where to download the illegal file. It's quite obvious that the pirate bay should be illegal, and I think the creators KNOW that, they just host the site simply because they can. I only pirate stuff once in a while, and not much anymore, so I don't care much. I personally hate intellectual property, and especially Disney. Mickey Mouse shouldn't be copyrighted anymore: Walt's dead.

Google at least removes the CP links when they know about them. TPB doesn't.

TPB isnt owned by an american company or has major influance upon it.

They found a loop hole and the only way to deal with it is to either take away our freedom to information, or make everything free and establish a new system. The dinosaurs in charge have made a disgusting primitive choice.

I was absolutely shocked when I heard the verdict. Oh well. It's not like anyone, anywhere could ever take the site down. It has hundreds of backup servers.

I think it's pretty lulzy how the site still goes on. It's kinda stupid why they're going to jail, after all, like some say, it's only a search engine. In theory you could sue every single search engine in that case and send a lot of people to jail. They're just being annoying.

I find it funny that the verdict was leaked the night before to Peter Sunde (he even twittered about it). The Swedish public seems to disapprove of the verdict as their Pirate Party gained over 3000 new members in the hours after it was officially announced, several protests are already being planned.

Yeah. Even google indirectly supports piracy by allowing torrent sites and other torrent search engines (even ROMs) available. I suppose they have to due to freedom of speech, so then again, why are they getting sentenced?

California has a Pirate Party, but it got shot down when they tried to expand into Utah.

What is this "Pirate Bay" of which you speak?

The Pirate Bay is a tracker of torrents, offers an image hosting service, a blogging service and some other things I haven't looked at, but all free in the sense of money and speech.

I'm very happy that this was the decision, though I wish the punishment was harsher. So much illegal activity goes on through torrents and it's really pretty pathetic. I understand that the internet is expected to be free, but freedom exists only when someone else's freedom is not infringed upon. That is the most basic tenet of society.

Whether or not it violates law, which it probably doesn't, the fact of the matter is that such torrent sites are completely and utterly immoral in nature and only exist to serve illegal content. Can torrents be useful and legal? Sure, but 95%+ of the downloads from TPB are not.

Hosting a torrent tracker is, in no way, illegal. They shouldn't have been punished at all. And who's freedom is being infringed upon even when people downloaded things they'd normally have to buy? Piracy is not theft.

I stated in my previous post that it probably wasn't illegal. Because of that I'm not sure that their punishment will be upheld, but I felt that it was definitely morally deserved, and that hosting directions to illegal content should become illegal if it is not already. As for who's [sic] freedom is being infringed upon, I think that's rather obvious. If a person would normally have to buy something, but can get it for free, obviously anyone who created or is distributing such content is having his/her freedoms infringed upon.

This is very much the same as the idea of copyright. If I create something and copyright it, it's illegal for you to sell my item to make a profit without my consent. The creators of TPB are gaining huge revenue based on advertisements when the vast majority of their traffic is wholly illegal in nature and violates copyright law.

Theft is the act of taking without permission. It does not matter whether the original is maintained or removed, you are using something of MINE for your enjoyment or profit, without my permission. That is theft, irregardless of whether or not your foolish blog linked depicts it as such or not, and the analogy to copyright should make this fully clear. If you feel the need to define the two terms separately as per the difference the site gives, it makes no difference to the validity of my argument.

Its also green! Stealing something from the store means you will throw it away one day., Since we dont recycle as much as we should chances are itll go to a land fill... When you pirate, you make a copy, and when you dont need it anymore, it goes to the recycle bin. No harm to the envrioment!
