Has anyone ever participated in a 24-hour film festival? They're tons of fun. I'm president of the film club at the University of Oklahoma, and we've hosted 2 so far. I've participated in both, and me and my team mates made these two movies. We had 24 hours to come up with a story, film it, edit it, and turn it in.

Tell me what you think, and BE HONEST!

At first sight, I thought this was about a 24 hour film fest, where you watch nothing but movies for 24 hours. :(

ALL PRAISE YOUR SUPREME LORD CORBO

We had an architecture event last year celebrating the 20th year of the architecture career in my university and we suspended classes to dedicate 1 whole week to doing among several things, movies.
The movie group was supposed to create somewhat like this except that just in a week, sadly, I wasn't in the movie group, I was in the designing group. The movie group looked so much fun that I wanted to be in, though.

I had never before heard a 24 hour film festival but sounds both, fun and challenging. I might suggest this for this year's architecture week.

ALL PRAISE YOUR SUPREME LORD CORBO

K now, about the movies,

I liked the first one the best, there was an actual and really powerful concept behind it.
It started fine with everything but in the middle of the film the music got annoying, mostly because they film itself is quiet but then all of a sudden a really loud music starts, it doens't start loudly but the fade in is just too short, IMO, it actually wasn't that it started all of a sudden that annoyed me but the fact that I didn't feel it that it was part of the composition I'm talking of around 3:10. The rest was okay, I loved the swings scene before and after the shoes because it was a very strong representation of how they were splitting up. The ending was a really good cliche. :hurr:
And why is the category comedy? :P
9/10

Now the second one,
I honestly watched it just because I felt forced to do it before commenting it. The guy driving annoyed me from the very first second he said his first line. Maybe the actors weren't properly chosen. The most obvious mistake was that you said "He's not breathing" and you were like really far away to know that, normally you know someone's not breathing by getting near them and feel if they inhale or exhale air through their nose :P
The rest wasn't that innovative in my opinion. It's the common storyline of wated guys that accidentaly drive over someone but he's not dead really so he comes looking for revenge. Kinda like "I know what you did last summer" just that instead of a fisherman they're clowns, for the lulz? And it could have easily been just 2 clowns, the girl clown had almost no presence in any of the scenes. The camera in the beggining was not proper for outdoors night time. Guess you can't ask for much editing in 24 hours :P
5/10

What I am curious about is the timeline of the event itself. You see in film one that the story is developed in several days but you don't actually see the night so that could have easily been shot during the day, the story takes place almost 90% in daylight. But the second one includes a physical night.
Do you start at a set time or you change it on each event? Or you just wait for the night and film?

Double post yay! Sorry but I had to bump it so you read it.

Thanks Corbo. Yes, I must say I like Goody Two Shoes more. Not to brag, but I did have better control over it than the other one.

The process is thus: At 9 p.m. on a Friday night, the students are divided into teams of 3 to 5 people. Each team gets a packet of materials, including a sheet with guidelines on it. It tells us certain lines of dialogue, objects, and story suggestions that must be in the movie (because otherwise, someone could make a good short beforehand and plant it in the submissions). The teams have until 9 p.m. the next night to finish their movies.

On the weekend that birthed Goody Two Shoes, one of the suggestions on the list was "An unnatural love for an inanimate object." My teammates and I sat around for a couple of hours tossing ideas around, until we hatched the story about a pair of girl's shoes and boy's shoes that get separated and then reunited. The initial concept was mine, and we all pitched in about what the specific events should be. I did most of the directing for this one. I picked the music track that appears at the very beginning and the very end ("Love is Blue" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIKpko4Ln90&feature=channel_page), as well as Beethoven's "Pathetique" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cELMIRPiZw&feature=related). [Interesting fact: both songs have been used in immunity challenges during SEN Survivor] Another teammate picked the theme song from the film "The Third Man," since I didn't have any good ideas for tension building music during the scene where the shoes miss each other and then find each other again. If given enough time, I probably would've picked a different song, but we had like an hour left at that point and just had to put something there. The crowd loved the movie (especially the girls; all of the girls in the theater went "Awww" when it looks like the "good" shoes are going to be thrown away) and I'm pretty proud of it. Plus, it's always fun to play the romantic lead.

I really didn't enjoy making the second one. During the first one, we did the planning and a couple of the shots at night, slept, and did the rest in the morning and afternoon. This time, we stayed awake for the full 24 hours. Yes, the night scene was filmed that night (it was below zero and windy and we were out there for hours). I didn't have any good ideas this time around, so we just sort of went with what was funny to us at the time. The girl had a bunch of clown costumes and makeup, so we went with it. It got unfunny pretty quickly. The outdoor night stuff and the torture scene were grueling. We were tied up and beaten for three freaking hours (we filmed a ton of shit for that scene, including an escape attempt, that didn't make the final cut). The "driver guy" had the most control over this one. By the end of it, everyone was exhausted, cranky, and ready to be finished with it. I was dreading the screening, since I didn't give much input during the editing and instead left to take care of film club business. But I found the final edit to be pretty funny. The audience, especially the guys this time, howled with laughter during the whole thing.

Thanks for the feedback, and I mostly agree with your opinions.

We sorta skirted along the edge there. The humans seem to have no awareness of the shoes' relationship, yet their "feelings" affect the humans.

Wait, did you not sleep at all within this 24 hour period? I guess that wouldn't be too hard to manage, but you would think your acting or editing skills might decay unless you were taking in a lot of caffeine.

It doesn't.
At least in my case when I have to stay up for entire nights and some times three times in a row doing plans and stuff I find it very weird that in late night hours my productivity actually increases. I do not drink caffeine whatsoever, just water and water.
I guess mortals that are not used to not sleeping would decay, yeah.
