I've always liked the piece in general, but for an unhappy context?

Aside from the fact that it's by Mason Williams, not Eric Clapton.

Diary Music: I don't even know what that means.

Diary music is basically that tune they play (in a movie) where some guy is recalling his thoughts and stuff.

Hallelujah for the Diary Music! A cover of it, though. (This could also work for the break up song. That or "everybody Hurts" by R.E.M)
For the dance, I vote One More Time.
Dreamy music - 1979 By Smashing Pumpkins.

That tune they play at the end of SAW movies when they recap. Lul.
