I know but AutoCAD is... kinda REALLY bad when it comes to 3d modeling. All I do with it is make my plans, nothing else.

Anyway, I think Bryce 3d is free.
Sketch up is half decent but you can't render. You can get plugins to render on sketch up, though. But I don't know if those plug ins are free. Other than that I forget. I'll probably remember more when I am laying in bed.

I suggest Blender. There is also a "Rendering SC Sprites in Blender" tutorial over at warboards.org along with lots of other general tutorials/examples online.

I took a 3D animation class back in high school that used autodest 3D max or something so I use gmax, which is almost the same thing. I trieded out blender once and it was ridiculously confusing. I even went through a couple of tutorials and I was still like wtf is going on.
